Gotcha (高茶), Soft European Bread

Soft European buns is derived from European buns such as sourdough or French baguette. It uses levain as natural yeast for the rise, but altered to be softer to fit Asian palate. Although its name has the word “European” in it, this type of bread is actually not European. It was invented by Japanese, adopted by Taiwanese, and recently glorified by Chinese. Gotcha has picked niche market and a good target audience base. I think the bread has good texture, but not as moist as the bread I am used to. Their continual sold-out merchandise seem to suggest that there’s definitely a market for soft European bread.

Mean Poutine Vancouver Downtown

Mean Poutine is not a fancy joint but they got the essentials of a good poutine down. They serve large portioned poutine with an affordable price of $8. I wish I had ordered the basic poutine instead of the Mean Supreme which has too much toppings. That way I could really know how much fresh cheese curds they put in each order. Perhaps that is something I will find out on my next visit.

Dog Eat Corndog

Dog Eat Corndog is a nice little food truck serving corndog. The owner use his secret recipe dough and sauce to bring us authentic Korean style corndogs. He uses low temperature to deep-fry the corndogs so he can give customers the ideal corndog he wants to serve even though it drastically reduce the efficiency in serving. I really enjoyed the taste and texture of the corndog batter. It’s like eating a cake inside a crispy corndog shell. The cost of corndogs ranges from $4 to $8 which is a little high for corndogs, but still acceptable given how much care the owner of Dog Eat Corndog put into each corndogs.

Mon Paris Patisserie

We were excited to try Mon Paris Patisserie after 3 years they have been open. The store is beautifully setup with display that just works. We really enjoyed the croissant, but think the cake can use some work. Next time we will come for the bonbons, macaron and Chocolate double baked with hazelnuts croissant. Mon Paris Patisserie is fairly priced. Even though I think the cake needs improvement, I’m sure there are customers who find the cake just perfect.

City 1 Cafe, Hainanese Chicken

Authentic Singaporean Hainanese chicken are usually paired with sweetened dark soy sauce and garlic-chili dipping sauce. The Hainanese chicken served at City 1 Cafe seems to be more in line with Cantonese style Hainanese chicken. However, this does not diminish the tastiness of these chicken. These chicken have succulent and firm meat with plump and smooth skin. With the bones removed, I can’t really ask for more. We recommend City 1 Cafe’s Hainanese chicken.

Chinatown BBQ

Chinatown BBQ is by far the best Chinese BBQ place I have tried, and yes, even better than the HK BBQ Master in Richmond. They use the perfect cuts to make the roast pork, and their duck have just the right meatiness without being too fat. Combined with the right process in cooking, Chinatown BBQ creates the most authentic, and pleasant experience of having Chinese BBQ. We recommend everyone to try Chinatown BBQ’s roast pork.

Minus Cake Boutique

Minus Cake Boutique makes really good cakes and drinks. Having a cake on top of the drink is a new concept we have not seen before. The combo makes cakes and drink cheaper by $0.50, but it is still very expensive. We would really recommend Minus Cake Boutique, but it is more of a place for special occasion rather than our default go-to cake shop.

The Poke Guy

The Poke Guy is truly a poke shop with integrity in mind. They use high-quality rice that is comparable to Tamaki Gold. It is properly cooked to create that separate rice grains that are just a little sticky, but not lumped together. The fish are flavorful even without the sauce. They only use wild-caught, Ocean-Wise seafood, and the owner says they wouldn’t have it any other way. We highly recommended this place to any Poke lovers out there.

CHUN FUN HOW Vancouver (春芳號)

Chun Fun How is a very new tea house just opened in May 2020. They gave us such a wonderful experience similar, but different from the ones we got from Hanlin Tea House. From the beautiful cup, the flavour, and the texture of pearls, every aspect of the store are carefully crafted. This is a tea house with integrity, and we cannot recommend it enough.
