RedBeef noodle Kitchen serves authentic Taiwanese food, but everyone mention their price whenever this restaurant is talked about. It seems like customers are always willing to eat sub-par food in exchange for a lower price point. In my experience in talking to restaurant owners, I found out that the last little extra mile of quality always requires a disproportionate large amount of effort. I don’t think RedBeef is expensive for the quality they provide.

Other Taiwanese Restaurant

RedBeef front

RedBeef is located in Kitsilano. They use red awning and signage to match the name. The red circular awning hovers over the sidewalk, making RedBeef very noticeable.

RedBeef interior

The storefront has lots of window and face South, so they have a lot of shades for solar control. We came here around 2:00 pm where there wasn’t a lot of customers but the sun was annoying some of the customers sitting close to the entrance. The interior space has black and gray as primary color. I think it’s a smart move to not use any red inside.

RedBeef table set up

The table was set up with simply 1 piece of napkin, 1 pair of chopsticks, and 1 glass of tap water. We have a small condiment stand on the side containing chili, soy sauce, and salt. The chili paste was more sour than spicy, perhaps they don’t want customers to make their own spicy noodle soup.

Boiled bean sprout $6.95

RedBeef noodle Kitchen boiled bean sprouts

This plate of boiled bean sprouts looks simple, but is actually very Taiwanese. The crispy, watery bean sprouts has its end strings snapped off so every bite feels full. It is topped with fried shallots, garlic and green onions to give that Taiwanese flavour.

Salt & Pepper Popcorn Chicken $8.95

The salt and pepper popcorn chicken has came with deep fried basil and long bean. Unlike most of the popcorn chicken I have tried, RedBeef’s popcorn chicken’s exterior is ot very crunchy. It has a soft shell, but not stale. There are still hint of its crispiness. I can only guess that these popcorn chicken were deep fried with low heat.

The popcorn chicken has wonderful flavour of alcohol and 5-flavour powder. Every piece of chicken have different size and shape but they are all juicy on the inside. I really enjoyed eating these with the deep fried basil and long bean.

Spicy beef noodle soup $13.95

I thought the beef noodle soup was simply their signature beef noodle soup with spicy sauce added to the bowl. After trying it, I dont think that was the case. The soup base was obviously a mixture of complimenting flavours. The flavour felt very precise and calculated. I enjoyed the spicy kick that comes with every sip of the soup. There are many meat in the bowl. They have obviously been cooked for a long time. I personally think they a little overcooked to start losing texture.

RedBeef noodle Kitchen premium red beef noodle soup serving ritual

When you order the premium RedBeef Noodle Soup, your waitress would come to your table to perform this last cooking ritual. The soup base is contained in a thermos to prevent temperature drop. Strips of raw certified angus beef are laid on top of the noodles to be blanched to the perfect tenderness.

Premium RedBeef Noodle Soup $19.95

Paying $20 for a bowl of beef noodle soup is too expensive. I convinced myself by saying this is a once in a lifetime experience, but then I came back two more times after. If you ask me, the $20 price point is worth it in all aspect. First of all, the noodle are at the perfect chewiness of a hand-made noodle. Soup base is very well taken care of as we already mentioned. The beef is very tender, but gives a good satisfying chew from the beautiful marbling. Adding in the waitress’ cooking performance, $20 is totally worth it.
