Other Hot Pot Restaurants

Outside of Mui Kee Chicken Pot

Mui Kee Chicken Pot is located on Alexandra Road, the unofficial “food street” of Richmond. This is quite a well-known street for decades. Mui Kee Chicken Pot is one of those restaurants that has been around for a while. Recently the restaurant undergoes a renovation for a face-lift. There are not many changes on the exterior, but the dining room looks a lot cozier now.

Cozy and Modern interior

The interior of Mui Kee Chicken Pot looks clean and brightly lit. It has a slight minimalist look to it, but all the wooden furniture and decor make the space feel cozy.

Table Setup

It was interesting to see metal chair, but the wooden tables look sturdy. Each table is equipped with a portable propane range for the chicken pot. The tablewares are simple white dishes with black cups.

How to eat chicken pot

Chicken pot is a relatively new way to enjoy hot pot. The general concept is customers get a standard chicken with their chosen base flavour. Side dishes are picked to be cooked with the chicken and the pot is delivered and cooked at our table with the lid on. Staff would come to each table to remove the lid when they know the pot is ready.

This is a perfect dish for larger groups because we can convert this into a hot pot once we finish the chicken. The soup in the pot gets boiled down to a thick broth to give the hot pot extra flavour. Some people may worry about conflicting flavour from different ingredients, but that’s a personal preference.

Signature Spicy Chicken Pot

Mui Kee Chicken Pot’s Signature spicy chicken pot cost $31.95 for the small version. We ordered the maximum spiciness and numbness knowing this is a Cantonese style restaurant, but we were pleasantly surprised. We were expecting half-assed spiciness, but Mui Kee’s means business when it comes to flavour. The broth was rich and thick with chicken collagen, and they are packed with flavour. The spiciness made both me and my friend sweat. We didn’t get to the hot pot portion, but it was an awesome eat during winter.

Chicken pieces

The chicken’s texture is quite firm. This is a good indication that the chicken may be free-range, or at least quite active. I was happy to see that there are not many shattered chicken bones to disrupt my enjoyment.

Deep-fried squid tentacle

It’s probably the owner’s standard of operation that our server kept trying to get us to order more items. We picked the deep-fried squid tentacle with chili and pepper for $8.95. Each piece contains two tentacles, which is a decent bite size. The exterior flour coating is not too thick, and the squid seems fresh.
