Michi Craft Kitchen’s Taiwanese restaurant is an above-average approach to both the cost and quality of food. The price is up there, but the food quality is playing catch-up. While the spicy Michi was pleasantly seasoned, there is nothing special about the chicken wing and sticky rice. Having to spend the effort on de-boning the chicken wings and stuffing sticky rice in them and charge customers $7 per chicken wing makes me wonder how they stay in business for over a year. Both of the rice dishes we have ordered have good taste. However, we would appreciate a more honest approach to rice/sauce proportion.

Summary

Michi is a relatively new restaurant that has been opened for a little over a year. The restaurant serves Taiwanese cuisine and specializes in sticky rice stuffed chicken wings. My partner and I have been eyeing this place since its grand opening, but haven’t had the chance to visit them. Since we still don’t feel safe dining in a restaurant due to COVID-19 pandemic, we have ordered delivery via FanTuan. Michi Craft Kitchen is located on Kingsway crossing Boundary road in Vancouver.

Strength: Interesting re-packaging of Taiwanese food.

Weakness: Food tastes good but does not justify the high price.

Modern take of Taiwanese cuisine

Michi Craft Kitchen feels sleek and simple. The logo and the interior of their dining room look very modern. It seems like they strive for taking what already exists in Taiwan and improve upon them. I have my doubts about using such an uncommon food as the restaurant’s name, but it sounds very catchy.

Well presented packaging

I like how the food is packaged. They have customized plastic bags and cardboard containers with a see-through lid. The containers and lids fit perfectly to each other, making them tightly fitted and easy to open. It was very thoughtful for Michi staff to include disposable gloves and lots of napkins for eating michi. I like how the spoons are made from plant starch for extra points on eco-friendliness.

Michi (Stuffed Wings)

Lots of work has been put into making one of these stuffed wings. The middle section of the chicken wings have been de-boned, and stuff with different ingredients with sticky rice. There are areas where the sticky rice is bursting out, so they did no cheap out on the carb.

We ordered an original and a spicy one. The original-flavored michi includes a small piece of sausage and half salted egg yolk. I feel that the sticky rice taste a little tasteless. The spicy-flavored michi on the other hand includes bits of corn and pea in it. The taste of spicy powder was wonderful.

Demon Braised Rice Bowl $9.69

The demon braised rice bowl is not much different from the traditional Taiwanese’s braised pork rice. Michi does a very good job of slicing instead of grinding the pork. I enjoy the taste, especially with the deep-fried onions adding an extra layer of complexity. There is a large portion of meat sauce compared to the rice. I think this dish is the best dish among the things I’ve ordered. Whether this dish is worth $9.69 is up to the individuals to decide.

Omelette Rice With Tomato Beef Stew $12.69

The omelet rice with tomato beef stew was a disappointment for me. I enjoy the tomato sauce tasting like Italian bolognese. However, the sauce was very disproportionate to the amount of white rice under the egg. There was only a thin layer of sauce on top of the egg, and it wasn’t nearly enough sauce for even just half of the white rice in the bowl. With the option on the menu to add the extra sauce for $5, this is actually a $17.69 dish that you can pay $5 less for a handicapped version. It is worth mentioning that the white rice was undercooked which made eating plain white rice even more intolerable.
