L’OTUS Cake Boutique Burnaby
We have not had the chance to try their original location in Richmond, but L’OTUS Cake Boutique in Burnaby is such a pleasant surprise for us. Yes, the price is a little higher, but it’s really worth the visit with all things considered. The atmosphere, service, and food quality are all at a superb level. We highly recommend L’OTUS Cake Boutique for anyone who hasn’t tried it.
L’OTUS Cake Boutique is a relatively new trendy dessert shop that serves cakes, ice cream, and drinks. They are well known for the high-quality desserts served in their store. The first location is in Richmond and it is always packed. We are excited to see their new location scheduled to open on January 12, 2020, in Burnaby near Metrotown, so we came over during their soft opening period to try it out.
Strength: High quality desserts with comfortable atmosphere. Relatively close to a sky train station.
Weakness: Traffic pattern changes make it difficult to get to.

Outside of L’otus Cake Boutique
We came here after dinner of a winter night and had a hard time locating this renowned dessert place because of the signage being turned off. L’otus Cake Boutique is located underneath the multiple residential dwelling building, “Modello”, and I suddenly have the urge to see if there are units on sale.
The foyer of L’otus Cake Boutique
From the foyer, I can already see lots of wood elements and greeneries being used for decoration. The sky-like backdrop gave us a calming feeling. This sets the mood as soon as we step into this dessert shop. We also find the lighting fixture a very unique part of the decoration.
The dining space
The entire space opens up with a double-height ceiling after the foyer. In the far end, we can see the counter where customers can order take-out cakes and drinks. We were directed to take a seat at the booth to take the order.
Certificates and displays at the counter
The first thing that caught my eyes was the beautiful cake displays at the far right corner. Customers can come here to see the types of cakes that are available for purchase. Next to the cakes are the ice cream section. It is worth to mention that the matcha flavoured ice cream took up almost half of the ice cream display. This is because these matcha ice creams have 5 levels of matcha intensity.
Individual booths feel intimate
Two major colors of wood and Tiffany-Blue are used throughout the store and they worked really well with each other. The backing of these booth seats extends upward to form a lowered sloped ceiling. Sitting inside one of these booths gives a bit of privacy. It’s perfect for having a date.
Highlighting the interior space
The interior space really feels comfortable. Modified lalaland soft music plays in the background in the volume that is barely audible so they don’t interfere with conversation, but provides a pleasant white noise so dates don’t become awkward.
Utensil and Tiffany-blue colored mugs
Each table is equipped with a small wooden tray for fork and spoons. Your order of cakes come with a fork, so these utensils are only provided in case you want to share.
5 intensity of matcha gelato
L’OTUS Cake Boutique uses high-quality matcha. Since good matcha can taste quite bitter, it may not be suitable for everyone. The store thoughtfully created 5 different intensity of matcha gelato so every customer can find the one that suits their palate. We ordered level 3 intensity and I think they have balanced the sweet and bitterness quite perfectly. The staff told me that starting level 4, the matcha intensity raises quite drastically.
L’OTUS Roll
We ordered the L’OTUS Roll on the menu because we wanted to check the quality of the cake which the store is confident to put their name on. This is basically a vanilla swiss roll with real vanilla seeds. I am not sure if I particularly enjoyed the somewhat wet texture of the cake, but they provide enough moist so I didn’t feel my mouth being dry. The cream felt a little too rich which made my mouth feel oily after eating them. However, eating these cream fillings with the cake gets rid of the oiliness left in the mouth.
Chestnut parfait with lots of goodies
Among the things we have ordered, I enjoyed the chestnut parfait the most. Unlike many other dessert places that offers parfait, the ones served in L’Otus are crafted with truly special ingredients. On the top, you can see a chestnut garnish and chestnut paste covering rose flavoured gelato. Below that, we found a layer of matcha jello on top of crushed cereal. The bouncy texture of jello is one of a kind among the parfait I have tried. The bottom layer is another specialty layer. I believe it is jello made with jasmine tea and there are fig bits to complete the color and texture. This is the most special parfait I have had in Greater Vancouver.
