Formosa Nursery, The Only Organic U-Pick In The Lower Mainland.
Blueberries are healthy, pesticides are not. Organic blueberries are expensive. If you are willing to pay a bit more for truly healthy blueberries, it is a lot more affordable when you go straight to the suppliers. Formosa Nursery blueberries are not overly sweet. These organic blueberries are a little sour, just how I think blueberries to be. Because it is fresh and never frozen, I could even taste a hint floral, kind of like roses. Please stay away from this location if you are selfish or have a tendency to break things. I’d like to continue enjoying this peace haven in the many years to come.
Formosa Nursery Organic blueberry u-pick
I’ve been considering if I should write a review for Formosa Nursery for a while. It’s not because whether they are good or not. They’re definitely a very good nursery. The problem is I cannot figure out a way to tell everyone how good this nursery is while fending off bad customers to keep Formosa Nursery as a peaceful haven. Due to the shape of berries, they are generally harder to clean. If the farm sprays the berry shrubs, you can pretty much be certain that you’re eating pesticide. We have been trying to find a farm with Organic U-Pick option without luck for many years. Formosa Nursery is really a good surprise for us. We would be coming here more often.
Organic Certified in Canada and US
Formosa Nursery is the only organic farm that offers U-Pick. We talked to the operator. They have been operating for 42 years. The regulation is very strict in obtaining organic farm certification. Allowing U-Pick adds a layer of uncertainties. Hence organic farms typically do not do U-Pick. The founder of Formosa Nursery adopted U-Pick to let customers enjoy nature without exposure to the pesticide.
There is a $5 Admission fee per adult for quality control. Every person entering the farm is required to fill in the registration form. The blueberries cost $6/LB pre-picked, and $3.75/LB U-Pick. We did U-Pick because it’s cheaper and we enjoy the process.
Staff are helpful
Above is a picture of the bottom of the shrubs. There are no pipes, so you know it must’ve been hard work taking care of these blueberries. You can see different species of plants growing next to the blueberry shrubs. I am not an expert, but I think they are supposed to help each other grow. Formosa Nursery is very well maintained. Staff comes around to check on U-pick customers to see what we need. They provide the buckets and teaches us how to harvest blueberries. If anyone in your party has trouble walking, they provide drop off and pick up service with a golf cart.
This Year’s First Batch Is Just Starting To Ripen
Yes, there are lots of green ones. It is the beginning of the season. The first batch is just starting to ripen. Look at the picture, the ones that are ripe are very large. The majority of the blueberries are the size of a penny. Some are larger than my thumb. This is a very satisfying experience.
When harvesting blueberries, pull on it lightly. Move on if it doesn’t come off. Some blueberries look ripe but are still green at its root. If you accidentally pulled them off, don’t throw them away. Leave it for a couple of days and it will ripen by itself.
Didn’t Take Long To Fill Our Bucket
We spent about an hour there and harvested 10LB of blueberries. I’m not sure if it’s because of the season or early morning visit, we didn’t have to spend much effort finding good blueberries. This makes the process faster. It’s a more efficient use of our time. When customers were dropped off, we were given a starting point. I assumed this is somewhat organized because our starting location has lots of large, ripe blueberries on the first blueberry shrub.
Other amenities includes two outdoor gazebo, approximately 5 hammock, and a mobile washroom. It’s a perfect place for photo or just chill and relax.
I cannot stress enough that Formosa Nursery is kind enough to open their organic certified farm for U-Pick. Please do not do anything that may violate their organic certification.
