eF & Be Bakehouse, authentic Japanese online bakery

Summary

Japanese call their buns “pans”. All of the items we got are not overly sweet and have a balanced flavour. I think the price is a little more expensive than most bakeries, but the quality of the baked goods really speaks for itself. We would advise anyone who hasn’t tried it to give it a try. The soft and chewy texture of the buns is what good buns should taste like.

How to order

eF and Be Bakehouse is very popular among the online community. They start accepting orders at 11:00 AM on Saturday, and the popular items can be sold out within minutes. The availability of baked goods are divided in regions. An alternative to get baked goods from eF and Be Bakehouse is to pick it up between 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM on Saturdays only.

Black Bean Pan $2.75

One of the more unique item is this black bean pan. They use black bean paste instead of the more traditional red bean counterpart. The pan has a chewy dough with a bit of crunch at the end of a bite. Inside, the black bean paste fills the entire bun, leaving a thin layer of bread on the outside. The black bean pan is not overly sweet. It hits the spot without leaving you thirsty.

Mochieese $4.00

Mochieese obviously named with the combination of mochi, and cheese. These are sphere bun filled with mochi, cheddar, and mozzarella cheese. The bun was fried with a coating of rice to provide more crispiness on the outside, however, this does make the buns a bit more oily. The taste is sweet and very cheesy, and the texture of the buns are very soft.

Spicy Cheese Pan $3.50

This spicy cheese pan overpowered my kitchen with a strong cheese aroma when I opened the bag. The spicy cheese pan has a soft and delicate gluten structure that makes it slightly chewier than other buns. The interior of the bun has beautiful cheese marbling. This bun is very cheesy with a slight spicy kick which is only apparent toward the end of a bite.

Black Sesame Melon Pan $3.00

The black sesame melon pan has a strong nutty flavour from the toasty black sesame. Inside of it, the bread is very soft. The bun has a slight hint of sweetness, and the top layer is a little crispy. This may feel like an ordinary bun with a layer of flavour only on the top, but the softness of the bun really make this bun stand out.

Pepperoni & Cheese $5.50

The pepperoni & cheese bun is a savory snack. Its salty cheesy aroma is really comforting, and has perfectly balanced flavour.

Triple Chocolate Mochi Cookies (2pcs) $5.00

The triple chocolate mochi cookie is eF and Be Bakehouse’s signature item. Their website says this is made with chocolate mochi but I didn’t find any. The cookie is a little on the dry side, and a glass of milk would be its perfect companion. There are bits of white chocolate and oats that you can taste. There’s not a whole lot of mochi inside, and parts of it have hardened by the time it is delivered to me.

Black Sesame Mochi Cookies (2pcs) $5.00

The black sesame mochi cookies is another signature item of eF and Be Bakehouse. It is made with roasted black sesame, white chocolate, and oats with mochi. This cookie has a rich nutty flavour, and it is the best tasting cookies among the 3 types of cookies that we got. I particularly enjoy the crumbling texture and how it just breaks apart in my mouth. There is significantly more mochi in this cookie.

Matcha Cookie with Black Sesame Mochi Cookies (2pcs) $4.50

The matcha cookie with black sesame mochi cookie is probably something I would not order again. It is matcha flavour, topped with white chocolate, black sesame, and oats. I could hardly see the mochi inside, and this makes this cookie very dry and sturdy. On top of that, the oat bits are very noticeable and distracting. Eating this cookie is like eating a large piece of consolidated fiber.
