Why I’m Skipping the Downtown Market: The 2025 Shipyards Christmas Market is Bigger, Better, and Free!
Every holiday season, Vancouverites face the same dilemma: brave the crowds downtown or find a new tradition. This year, I made the trek across the inlet to North Vancouver, and I have a bold declaration to make: The Shipyards Christmas Market 2025 is the new holiday champion.
Located in the historic Shipyards District near the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus terminal, this European-themed winter wonderland has completely won me over. If you are on the fence about where to spend your festive evenings between November 28 and December 24, 2025, here is why this spot needs to be at the top of your list.
It’s Free (and Massive!)
Let’s address the elephant in the room—most holiday markets these days come with a steep entry fee just to browse the stalls. Not this one. Admission to the Shipyards Christmas Market is 100% free.
But it isn’t just about saving money at the gate. My first impression was pure awe at the scale of it. Compared to the Vancouver Christmas Market downtown, this feels two times bigger. We are talking about an 81,000-square-foot sparkling winter wonderland. Because there is so much more walking room, you don’t feel that claustrophobic “penguin shuffle” you often get at tighter venues.
With over 140 vendors (a significant jump from last year), the variety of artisanal gifts, decorations, and crafts is staggering. It feels expansive, breathable, and genuinely welcoming.
The Food: You Need to Try the Pork Hock
I consider myself something of a holiday market foodie, and I have to talk about the food. While you can find the staples like bratwursts, warm mulled wine (Glühwein), and hot cocoa, there was one standout star for me.
The pork hock here is much better than what I’ve had elsewhere.
If you are a meat lover, you know the struggle of dry festival food. That wasn’t the case here. The pork hock was incredibly juicy and tender, falling right off the bone, but the real magic was the crispy skin. It had that perfect crackle that makes you close your eyes and savor the moment.

Parking in the Shipyards District is already limited, and with the popularity of this market, finding a spot can be incredibly hard to come by. The frustration of circling for a spot can kill the holiday mood pretty quickly.
Luckily, the market is located mere steps from the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus terminal. The ride over from Waterfront Station is part of the fun—you get a stunning view of the city lights reflecting off the water, and you get dropped off right at the entrance of the market. It’s stress-free and lets you enjoy that mulled wine responsibly!
