Moii Cafe, Japanese Crepe

Summary

Just a sneak peak of what’s inside. Whenever there’s chicken, we can see a lump from the outside. Cheese has been fully melted. Chicken can be a bit dry. Moii Cafe has changed its serving plate from porcelain to composite wood. Although the wooden plate is flat, I think this is a good business decision. The hot crepe naturally sticks to the bottom. Their knife is not super sharp. I guess the porcelain plate and knife created too much squeaking sound. This shows the store manager paid attention to finer details in the store.

Strength: The Only Japanese Crepe Around The Area. Low Cost Coffee

Weakness: Semi Underground Limited Exposure Of Store

Moii Cafe is a coffee shop that also serves crepe and bubble tea. The price of coffee is a lot more affordable compared to giant franchise coffee places nearby. There is usually 2-3 staff working at any given time. They are all very friendly and welcoming. Moii Cafe is located conveniently on Cambie St. close to Broadway, Vancouver.

Because Moii Cafe is located on the side of a sloped Cambie St, their store is partially underground. This limited their storefront real estate and making them harder to spot. A sandwich board sign is used to get more exposure.

Retro Style Interior

The interior decor is very retro. They have an old washing machine with dryer, old TV, and typewriter as decor. There is also a mosaic made of vinyl records sleeves as wall finishes.

Clean, Bright, Comfortable Interior

Moii Cafe has recently been renovated. the interior space is bright and looks very clean. Solid wood communal table in the middle gives a warm feeling. I don’t know why their air conditioning units are cranked up really high at some areas. You might want to grab a jacket.

In front of the cash register, you can see their crepe & drink combo. Below it is the cute dolls what I’ve always thought were hedgehogs. Only looking at the picture now do I realize they are actually owls. There are time-limited special offers. If you come here in the morning. They also serve cookie and muffins at a really low price. If you are into healthy breakfast. They also have bananas for $1 each.

Moii Cafe, Crepe Creamer Station
Moii Cafe, Crepe Creamer Station

I like how they decorate the creamer station with baskets. The design is subtle but pleasant. This convenient station is small but complete. You can find most of what you need here. There is a basket layered with a piece of paper towel on the right side for you to throw away your wet stir stick. You can also find the tray return area below, and garbage can to the left.

The complete crepe menu is behind the open crepe station. The menu is divided between savory and sweet. The handwritten menu from colored chalk brings back childhood memories.

Friendly Staff Allowed Me To Take Pictures While She Makes The Crepe

Staff of Moii Cafe used to be very careful with the batter spilling when I first started coming here. Back then, they had to make sure the amount of batter they put on the hot plate is enough, but not too much. I guess for efficiency purposes they have been instructed to prioritize what’s more important. I think the edges should be cleaned a bit more often than this.

I ordered the BBQ chicken with cheese crepe. She filled the cheese on half of the crepe.

They use pre-packaged cooked chicken. It’s a business decision that makes sense. I won’t have the patience to wait for the chicken to cook from raw. However, this resulted in the re-heated chicken being a bit too dry.

When you order a combo, you get a small salad with your crepe. You also get to choose simple drinks between black or green tea. The green tea was refreshing, and not overly sweetened.

The crepe was folded in 6 before it’s served. There are more herbs as seasonings on top of the crepe. This is Japanese style crepe, rather than French. The dough is thicker and tastes very buttery. It is more elastic than crispy.

604 Food Critic Assessment

For a $13.75 a combo, the crepe is actually more filling than I imagined. I thought I’d have to grab other food sometime in the afternoon, but this actually filled me up until dinner. Moii Cafe’s staff is mainly Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese. Their friendliness makes Moii Cafe a pleasant place to go and chill.
