Summary

We found a new trendy place in Richmond. It is the first Miss Fu In Chengdu franchise location in BC. The line up 2 weeks ago was 3 hours, so we decide to come and give it a try over the weekend. This is a spicy food restaurant, so get your palettes ready. Miss Fu In Chengdu is located on Alexander Road near Hazelbridge way in Richmond.

Strength: Well balanced profile. Food is spicy like they mean it. Good service as soon as you sit down

Weakness: Line up is a little too long

Line up all the way out the door

We knew this new restaurant has a long line up, so we arrived before they are open at 5:00 pm. The waiter told us the wait is 30 minutes, but we waited until 6:15 to be seated. I get it, we have to wait until the first table to leave for the space to free up. This is not something the server can control.

Water and Candy station for the waiting customers

Waiting in line is never a virtue for Chinese people. Throughout our wait, there were people way down in the line constantly checking their status with the server. I think the server was really patient. Having candy and cucumber water at the front waiting area is a very nice touch.

It is worth mentioning that you can bring in your own drink. So you might as well buy a bubble tea while waiting. It’ll be like starting on your cocktail in Cactus Club Cafe.

Try the ultimate taste just once!

I also noticed a poster at the front door as an advertisement. This poster is quite hidden, and I can’t stop thinking this ultimate taste is going to conquer my stomach the day after. Overall speaking, this is not really false advertisement. The food does taste really good.

Floral decor and dark interior with accent of red

Miss Fu has an extravagant floral feature wall visible as soon as you enter the restaurant. The tone of the restaurant is neutral and slightly dark. Throughout the store, you can see red-colored elements used as an accent.

Waiters are doing their best catering to everyone’s need

There are about 70 seats in the entire restaurant but only 3 waiters catering to everyone. I think Miss Fu in Chengdu is a little under-staffed. The table was freshly wiped and still wet when I sat down. One of the waiter gave me two pieces of napkin and asked me to wipe the table. I don’t blame him for it. After an hour of wait, I’m completely fine with helping to expedite my food arrival time.

This is called the dry dish

There is also the oily dish which has a lot of chili oil and seasonings. I find them sometimes too greasy so ordered the dry dish with ground chili powder and crushed peanuts. This seasoning dish costs $2.95 per dish and goes well with the skewers.

Duck Blood was soft and spicy enough

The duck blood was thinly sliced. They are most tender and the spicy sauce was flavourful without being too spicy. You can see a layer of bean sprouts at the bottom to provide some crunchiness to this dish.

Freshly made sticky rice cake

The deep fried sticky rice cake was freshly made. It comes with 5 pieces per order and they are hot when first arrived to our table. The exterior is slightly crunchy. To my surprise, it is not very oily. The interior was very soft but the rice cake was able to retain its shape. Brown sugar syrup and baked soy powder adds a subtle, but balanced flavour to these appetizers. Notice there are only 5 pieces for $10, so meals here can get pricey if you are not careful.

Noodle with Peas

This is the first time I tried noodle with pea. Apparently this is a Chengdu popular dish that I never knew about. It taste kind of like Tan Tan Noodle. The pea were cooked thoroughly. They break in my mouth and gave a powdery texture to the noodle which goes very well with the sauce. The noodle were cooked perfectly with good feedback to the bite.

Crispy Fried Pork Strips

This dish is deep-fried battered pork strips. I like how the outer shell is tougher than most other deep-fried pork strips I’ve tried. The colors are darker. But the crunchiness was clean and not too oily. The pork taste goes well with the chili powder. The batters were well seasoned to make it very falvourful.

Pork can get fatty

The fatty part of the pork was very satisfying. As I bite into them I could feel the juice spewing out. I think the fat and lean meat ratio was very closely moderated. There are good alternation between the too.

Skewers in Broth Soup

Miss Fu In Chengdu Sichuan tapas and skewers in Richmond Skewers in Broth Soup $8.95 for soup, $0.69 for each skewer

The skewers in broth soup come in a deep tin bowl. This is not skewers in hot pot where you cook the food from raw. The food was pre-cooked before soaked in the delicious broth. I like this better than the hot pot way because I often overcook the food in my hot pot. This way, I get to eat the food with the restaurant’s intended texture.

Even though the the broth soup cost $8.95, each skewers are quite cheap at $0.69 each. This really encourages the customers to order more skewers. I haven’t been a big fan of this type of wet skewers, but Miss Fu In Chengdu did it very well. The soup base was quite spicy, but the underlying flavour was mouthwatering. Also, each types of skewers were cooked just right. They were cooked just right. The lotus roots was very thin and crunchy which was refreshing. Short ribs were cooked for longer that the meat comes right off the bone.

Thoughtfully designed skewers bin

On top of each table, you’ll see the well designed bamboo skewers bin. There are carvings on them, and the material really works with the store. I find it beautiful to look at, but gets in the way. After putting the skewers in this becomes a center piece on a small table. It’s a bit distracting to look at. Luckily the staff are vigilant in collecting these skewers. Let’s not discuss if they reuse the bamboo skewers.

Cube pudding is a must order for Chengdu Cuisine

Nothing pairs better with the spicy Sichuan spicy food other than the cube pudding. It has some nuts and dried fruit toppings for flavour. The brown sugar syrup makes this a sweet dessert after all the spiciness. It’s very refreshing.
