Truedan (JenJuDan) Bubble Tea

Summary

Truedan is a bubble tea shop, and to call themselves the master of brown sugar drinks is an overstatement. We go to Truedan for the 0.85cm bite-size bubble that they are proud of. These bubbles’ selling point is the sweetness throughout, but I find them a little monotonous. The overpowering sweetness makes me thirsty after each sip, and I find the taste quite boring after the 3rd sip. It is fortunate that the store is flexible on the sweetness level because the normal sweetness is just too much. At $6.50 per cup, we do not recommend Truedan.

Summary

Truedan opened its first location in Taipei’s Shilin night market in 2010. The main selling point for Truedan is that they use Taiwanese traditional method to make hand-cooked brown sugar tapioca that is served with high-quality fresh milk. It has grown popularity over the years, and in January 2020, Vancouver finally welcomes our very own Truedan locations. The one we visited is on Kingsway, near Boundary Road in Vancouver.

Strength: High-quality ingredients with traditional cooking methods.

Weakness: Mediocre service. Boring flavour profile.

Trudan’s decoration and service

I’m not sure if there is any issues with the franchise or a marketing strategy but all Truedan in Canada have been using the name “JenJuDan Canada” instead of Truedan. This is a very simple store with white logo on black background. The interior has oriental style drawers that can be seen in oriental herbal stores. There’s a very small space before the front counter for customers. Unfortunately, not every staff has a friendly attitude.

The taste is nothing to write home about

I have tried a few drinks in Truedan, namely Capped Brown Sugar Pearl Milk, Brown Sugar Pearl Milk, Pudding Brown Sugar Pearl Milk, and the Celadon Green Tea Latte. The impressions these drinks leave me are just mediocre, and I will explain why. No matter the variation, these brown sugar pearl milk are simply sweetened milk with pearls for $6.50 a cup. The bubbles have a soft, gelatinous exterior, and a chewy inside. I am not a big fan of this inconsistency. The drinks with pearls feel quite heavy, and not refreshing.
