Mr Mustache Tea and Dessert in Burnaby

Food Quality

Reasonable Priced
Summary

It was a little disappointing to see Mr. Mastache is making mistakes on the pearls, which is the most rudimentary part of a bubble tea shop. However, the quality of the cakes still cannot be ignored. The interior space feels very cozy, and the staffs are friendly. Mr. Mastache is not a low-cost spectrum among the bubble tea stores we have in Vancouver. I particularly like the fact that they are not part of any franchise, and they can really be a life-saver when someone needs to get a small-portioned cute little cake.

Summary

Mr. Mustache was one of the better non-franchise bubble tea shops in Vancouver. They were on the forefront to curate fresh spins to bubble tea and were well known for their cheese tea. These are cold tea topped with a layer of foamy cream cheese mixture. Mr. Mustache also serves a good variety of very well decorated individual cakes. We came to their newer location in Burnaby location on Sussex near Kingsway. The original location is on Granville Street in Vancouver.

Strength: Warm, cozy interior atmosphere. Cute looking cakes.

Weakness: Not a lot of parking spaces nearby

Other Bubble Tea Shops

Front of Mr. Mastache

Mr. Mastache is located at an oddly shaped corner accessed through the sunken patio from the street level. The building above forms an overhang above the store, so the entry looks quite dark regardless if you come during the day or at night. The good thing is the interior seems to be always brightly lit.

A complete opposite atmosphere when you enter

The interior of Mr. Masache is decorated with lots of wood and warm lighting to create that cozy feeling. There are lots of seats with large tables to allow local students to work on their laptops. The seating area is quite close to the front counter, but the staffs don’t seem to mind about customers spending time in the store. It’s quite a friendly place.

One of the signature for Mr. Mastache is their baked goods. When they have opened a couple of years back, rumor has it that the storeowner spent lots of effort on research and developing on how to making good tea and cakes. Years have passed, and Mr. Mastache remains as the few places in Vancouver where you can walk in to get cute looking cakes.

Brown Sugar Pearls with Milk

Mr. Mastache specializes in their Cheese topped tea, and fruit tea. I saw a sign saying they now offer the brown sugar pearls with milk and ordered one to satisfy my sweet tooth. To my surprise, half of the pearls are undercooked. It is obvious that two batches of pearls were mixed together. The center of these pearls are really hard to bite into and the other half seems fine. This is quite unacceptable to happen in a bubble tea shop.

Earl Grey Swiss Roll

We have also ordered a slice of swiss roll. The slices are quite thick and the earl grey flavour is very unique. I noticed the inner part of the cake in contact with the fillings is wet, but I guess that’s normal. These cakes have a spongy texture and the filling is very creamy. I find myself having to balance between the two.
