Michele Cake Shop is the Best Bakery at Kerresdale
We purchased a small chestnut cake because they did not have the sliced versions. Our cake was beautifully layered with fruits and whipped cream. The extravagant chocolate decorations look like abstract art. We cut it open to reveal the layered sponge cake and chestnut filling. The sponge cake has good springy texture, and they are not dry at all. I enjoyed the chestnut filling because they are not too sweet. Most of the sweetness comes from whipped cream. The flavour profile is very balanced.

Michele Cake Shop is a long standing Chinese Bakery in Kerrisdale. Many considered them to be the best Chinese bakery. That may have been changed as newer trendy bakery opens over the years. Michele Cake Shop still provide baked goods much superior than many Chinese bakery franchise.
Strength: Individually owned, really good egg tarts and cake
Weakness: Baked good texture may be too soft compared to Artisan

The quiet side of Kerrisdale
Michele Cake shop is located in the quite side of Kerrisdale on West Boulevard. They used to be my only reason why I would turn onto West Boulevard when I visit Kerrisdale. The awning looks the same throughout decades, and have been identified as “The Bakery with a green awning”.
Modest wooden sign
Beneath the awning, there is a very modest wooden protruding sign above the door. The dark colored background somehow muted the black letter and flourishing graphic.
Left side of the interior
The interior was not very thoughtfully decorated. These conventional decoration style involves a black wall with some framed paints mixed up in some framed awards. There is a large television behind the cake counter that used to display videos of their cake making process. The space is considerably bright, making the baked goods on display more appetizing. You have to grab a number ticket to be served in order. Many other Chinese bakeries have adopted this method.
The cooling rack side
On the right side of the bakery you can see the cooling racks. This is where the wonderful aromas are from. The racks are transitions for freshly baked buns that just came out of the oven. If you are lucky, you can see them packaging the freshly baked Portuguese style egg tarts.
Individual packaged desserts
The section closer to the storefront windows features these individually packaged desserts. They are wrapped in clear plastic bags for protection.
The buns on display
Michele Cake Shop has good quality buns that’s perfect for fast breakfast or snack. You can find many varieties of Chinese buns with familiar flavour. Their buns have more sustenance compared to most other generic franchise bakeries.
Great place for Birthday Cakes
There are many cakes in display, some of which comes from customers order. My favorite cakes from Michele Cake Shop are Mango and Chestnut. The cake service is typical of pre-order, and cake writings. These cakes are perfect for birthdays or any other special occasion.
Cakes by the slice
If you don’t have a big family to share a large cake, there’s the option to get a smaller sized cake. Or, you can buy cakes by the slice. They are slightly more costly but you get to purchase just the right amount. You also get to enjoy different types of cakes.

There is a reason why Michele Cake Shop received such a praise among the Chinese community. Their buns are convenient for fast breakfast, and their pastries are perfect for afternoon snack. The cakes are made with care and quality ingredients you can taste. It is an all-around bakery catering to customer’s everyday needs. There are of course much better bakeries, but I would recommend Michele Cake Shop’s overall performance and its cost versus quality worthiness.
