Summary

Yunshang Rice Noodle serves most of its main course in hot clay pot. It’s a warm comfort food alternative to hot pot in this cold weather. The food doesn’t taste that special. Our visit cost us about approximately $19 per person. For the same price, there are better rice noodle options.

Summary

Yunshang Rice Noodle opened the first location in Richmond and recently opened its second location in the Crystal Mall. It is interesting to see Yunshang Rice Noodle collaborate and share the restaurant space with Yang’s Braised Chicken on Rice. They both use hot clay pot to serve food so this collaboration kind of makes sense.

Strength: Unlimited rice noodle to fill you up

Weakness: Taste is average and a little expensive

Other Noodle Places

Storefront of both businesses

Yunshang Rice Noodle spans through 4 storefronts. They occupy two storefronts and give the other two to Yang’s Braised Chicken Rice. The contrast color of yellow and white make them seem like 2 stores, but they share one large dining area once you go inside. It’s basically one store with 2 names.

One space separated into 4 sections

The interior space is split into 4 areas. There is a raised platform to the right that reads like the Yunshang Rice Noodle area. To the far left, there is a semi-enclosed area. These two areas are served by the aisles from the entrance which wraps around the central dining area. The back portion of the space is the staff counter and kitchen area. The staff seems to be young and a little clueless. I think this is due to this restaurant being new.

Table setup and caution sign

Each table is equipped with a black plastic cup, a pair of plastic chopsticks, a ramen spoon, and a simple condiment station. In front of each customer, there is also a caution sign to warn customers that the bowls are extremely hot.

Oriental rice noodle with spicy sauce with lamb $11.49

This traditional method of enjoying rice noodle involves cooking raw toppings in the hot soup base in a clay pot. The soup have a thick layer of oil on top for heat retention. Legend says this type of cooking method started approximately 100 years ago when a wife crosses the bridge used this method to provide hot food for her husband. The soup in clay pot comes to our table while it’s still boiling.

Cross Bridge Rice Noodle

The rice noodle comes with 12 sides to be added to the hot soup to be cooked. It is advised to add the raw meat into the soup first to make sure the raw meat is fully cooked. As you put the ingredients into the soup, the temperature starts dropping. This doesn’t mean the soup becomes warm. Whatever temperature it drops, the clay pot gives it all back. The entire bowl remained hot during my visit. It is worth mentioning that you can get unlimited rice noodles here.

Beef with chili sauce and Chinese parsley $8.99

We also ordered the Beef with chili sauce appetizer. This dish is quite salty, and the meat was a little hard to chew. I like the refreshing texture from Chinese parsley and the crunchy peanuts.

Yang’s Braised Boneless Chicken Rice $11.99

We also ordered a braised boneless chicken rice at the spiciest level. The chicken also arrived in a really hot pot. There are bell peppers that were waiting to be cooked so I submerged them immediately. The chicken has a good spicy level to pair with white rice, but nothing too special after that. I ordered the boneless chicken version for an additional $2. The bone-in version is $9.99.
