Summary

I like how yolk’s food tastes. Everything seems to be made to be very high quality in all aspects. It’s really a restaurant that excites your palate for tastes you never knew existed. The downside for Yolks is its above-average price. You are looking at about $25 per person if you come here. Despite the high price, I think everyone should give Yolks a try at least once.

Summary

As its name suggests, Yolks is a brunch restaurant in Vancouver. They have two locations, one on East Hastings and the other on West Broadway. I still remember the first time I came to visit Yolks and saw their menu specialize in egg benedict. It was when egg benedict means the fancy way to enjoy your brunch, and it’s also fitting for the store name Yolks. The menu has changed for my most recent visit to offer more varieties of brunch options.

Strength: Very well crafted brunch to entice your palate

Weakness: Very expensive

Other Brunch Restaurants

Yolks Front

Yolks is located on West Broadway. The exterior has a hint of light baby blue color and they use yellow and white that is similar to an egg. There’s a yellow sandwich board sign in front and the store has full height storefront glazing to showcase their interior.

Interior of Yolks

There is a counter to separate seating and waiting area when I first enter. The ceiling has a curved mesh that is visually interesting. The entire restaurant uses a lot of birch colored furniture that is light and uplifting.

Table setup

Every table is equipped with sugar and hot sauce and the menu is presented in a way that feels like it’s framed by the wooden table. I was given a jug of water and a plastic cup. After I ordered the waffle, I also received maple syrup.

Lemon Truffle Potato

The lemon truffle potato is one of the Yolks signature items that I always order when I visit. They are bite sized hash brown cut from small potatoes. Most restaurants just add truffle oil onto the deep-fried potatoes, but Yolks’ addition of the lemon juice compliments truffle’s flavour and cuts through the grease and makes this dish more refreshing.

Chicken Waffle

I ordered the Chicken waffle. It came in a long and harrow horizontal plate with fried chicken and waffles stacked on top of each other. On the far side, there are two poached eggs, which felt a little out of place on this plate. I drizzled some maple syrup on top of the waffle to add some sweetness and they looked very photogenic.

Chicken Waffle comes with two poached eggs

My two poached eggs are placed on the far side of the plate and they look a little out of place. The server asked me if I am okay with eggs being soft poached, and they cooked the soft poached eggs to perfection. The golden gooey yolks flow out as soon as I bite a hole on them, making a satisfying mess on the plate. I put one poached egg on my waffle, topped with a piece of fried chicken to make my own version of Chicken Waffle Egg Benedict.

Preserved Jalepeno Pepper

There are a few slices of pickled jalapeno pepper on top of the fried chicken. They have a crispy texture and provided a very pleasant flavour variation from the sweet maple syrup and rich gravy.

Gravy That Comes With The Chicken

The gravy for the fried chicken is surprisingly good. The thick and rich savory taste is accompanied by a slight sweet which compliment each other and never gets tiresome. They gets into the uneven surface of the fried chicken batter and add a lot of moist to the fried chicken. It softens the batter so I don’t hurt my gum, but the crispiness of the batter is retained.

Juicy Fried Chicken

Yolks chef uses strong culinary skills to make the thick pieces of chicken perfectly cooked and juicy. When I bite into the fried chicken, juice actually starts dripping. It requires exceptional skills to achieve this level of juiciness throughout on a piece of white meat.
