Fortune Lamb Dining is a Chinese restaurant serving Northern Chinese cuisine. They focus on Chinese pita bread, noodles, and lamb. You can also come here for skewers. Their menu is very comprehensive. I was surprised to see a 28-page menu with specialty items on the walls as decoration. Fortune Lamb Dining is located on Kingsway near Joyce in Vancouver.

Next to Li’s China Grill

Fortune Lamb Dining is right next to Li’s China Grill. They even share the same alcove entrance. Both restaurants are similar style and they both serve skewers.

Dining room is bright and spacious

The Restaurant is one big dining area. There are seating along the wall, and an aisle right down the middle. We have the typical white table with wood chair in Chinese restaurants. Tables are wiped down with wet cloth when we just sat down. This restaurant is relatively clean.

Chalkboard special menu

When we arrived it was already full. The waitress was not able to give us an estimation of wait time because most of the patrons just sat down. Five minutes after, she asked us if we area okay sitting near the kitchen. I think this is very accommodating.

New item special menu

There are items on the new arrival special menu that I wouldn’t dare trying. To give you some previews, they involve male lamb reproductive organs.

Tear The Chicken With Your Hand

The hand-torn chicken was cleverly named as “Tear The Chicken With Your Hand”. It is served with cilantro, green onion, garlic, and lots of onions. Probably too much onions. Soy sauce, garlic and onions are very overpowering. Unfortunately, the interior of the chicken is doesn’t have much taste.

Skewers have minimum orders

The lamb skewers are $1.99 each with a minimum order of 5. They are served with metal skewers and each skewer comes with 5 pieces of meat. Fortune Lamb Dining adopted the methods of 70% lean meat with 30% fat. It’s a very good tactic, but I think it’ll work better if they don’t use completely lean meat with complete fat. The lean meat are sturdy. They are tough to the bite and hard on my teeth. The fat are usually on the 4th piece. Some skewers have 2 pieces of fat on the 2nd and 4th piece of meat on the skewer.

Crispy Sesame Buns

The Crispy Sesame Buns have crispy exterior. They have interesting pattern on the outside to maximize surface area. It is named “Crispy Sesame Cake” because the interior are extremely fluffy.

The interior has many layers. They are separated with grease. These crispy sesame buns are moist enough to be enjoyed by itself.

Crispy Sesame Cake with Marinated Lamb

This dish is obviously the lamb version of pork buns. The pork buns I’ve had from Terracotta Boyz has plain bun. Fortune Lamb Dining use their Crispy Sesame Cake as the buns so this dish benefit from the crispy shell.

The interior is filled with green onion, cilantro, with diced Lamb. The interior of crispy sesame bun is now even moist with the filling. 

Grilled Calamari on a stick

The grilled calamari cost $2.99 per skewers with minimum order of 4. They are slightly burnt at the edge, but the rest of it is actually very juicy and chewy.

Each calamari skewer is actually large portioned. The $2.99 price point is well worth it.

Baked Steamed Buns

These baked steamed buns are sliced and grilled. The texture is firm and sturdy. You can see seasonings on both sides, but I still feel they don’t have a lot of flavour. It’s good to go with other more flavoured skewers.

Pot Hand Tearing Cabbage

We ordered this Pot Hand Tearing Cabbage as the only vegetable dish. They are served in a small wok with a candle warmer below. There is no candle in the candle warmer but this dish was able to retain the heat due to the amount of oil in it. The cabbages were torn into irregular shapes to capture more flavour. It is stir-fried with dried chili, onion, and carrots. This dish is very tasty.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Fortune Lamb Dining serves authentic Northern Chinese cuisine for $30 per person. Their food taste good but the food is expensive. This restaurant used to taste even better, but the quality of their food decreased as they got busy over the years. I would still recommend this restaurant, however I would be careful on what to order.
