The Hainanese chicken served at City 1 Cafe seems to be more in line with Cantonese style Hainanese chicken. However, this does not diminish the tastiness of these chicken. These chicken have succulent and firm meat with plump and smooth skin. With the bones removed, I can’t really ask for more. We recommend City 1 Cafe’s Hainanese chicken.
If you are searching for the best Hainanese chicken like me, you are sure to stumble upon City 1 Cafe. This small restaurant seats less than 20 guests. Rumor says that the Hainanese chicken here is so good and that should be the only thing you order. City 1 Cafe’s laksa and roti are not bad, but falls short when you compare to the superb quality of their Hainanese Chicken. City 1 Cafe is tucked away at the corner of the Safeway at West King Edward Avenue and Oak Street in Vancouver.

Small modest restaurant
City 1 Cafe has a narrow storefront with brick finishes. It has a small interior space of approximately 200sf for the customer area. The decor are simply painted wall with a few tables, nothing fancy. Customers walk through the dining hall to get to the counter to pay or pick up order. I always come for pick-up so I can enjoy Hainanese chicken at the comfort of my own home.
Juicy and flavourful Hainanese Chicken
We ordered half Hainanese chicken. They are boneless free range chicken that are tender and juicy. I am surprised to find out how succulent chicken breasts can be when it is made correctly. These springy meats are packed with flavour, and they come with 3 dipping sauce. Hainanese chicken are enjoyed cold, and these chicken have a thick, gelatinous thick skin that tastes like jello. This further hydrates the meat to pair with the oil rice.
