The salted egg potato chips seem to have crept up onto supermarket shelves recently. We think it’s such a genius idea that as soon as we found out about their existence, we went straight to T&T Supermarket to grab a bag. The expensive price tag exceeds 2 bags of other chips of the same weight but we still bought it to see how it tastes. Stip’s Chips is manufactured in the Philippines.

Yellow packaging

Stip’s Chips was one of the first salted egg chips we saw, and we soon realize there are many other brands to choose from. There are two options to the Stip’s Chips’ salted egg potato chips, one is original, and the other is spicy. The original one has yellow as its primary color. It definitely caught my attention. The packaging has a contemporary feeling to it. They even put Instagram and facebook link at the bottom.

Back of the packaging

At the back of the packaging, you can find a blurb of Stip’s Chip’s vision. There’s also the nutrition facts. As I suspected, the creamy salted egg adds a lot of saturated fat to the chips. Consider yourself warned.

Easy to open tear notch

I think this is a thoughtful design. Salted eggs are known to be a little heavy, and I doubt I could finish it in one sitting. The notch on the side helped me tear open the bag with ease. The entire bag is tightly sealed that it was a lot harder to open the airlock than a zip-lock bag.

Opening the bag of chips

The chips are about 1/3 filled with chips. I thought it was a bit disappointing, but the packaging did indicate 200g in weight. There is a desiccant alongside the chips to keep things dry.

The salted egg powder evenly covers the chips

When I open the bag, the cooked salted egg aroma flows out even before I see the chips. All of the chips are covered by salted egg powder seasoning. There are some with large clumps of seasonings but every chip has adequate flavour.

So how does it taste?

The chips were crispy. I was surprised how they retained the crispiness when they’re covered by the thick salted egg seasonings. When I put on in my mouth, the exterior salted egg creamy layer just rubs off. Then, an explosion of wonderful flavour filled my mouth. These chips taste like a modified salted egg. There are some sweetness that comes with saltiness. This is the most dangerous combination because these two major tastes enhance each other. Once you get yourself going at eating these, it’s gonna be really hard to stop.

What’s that black spec on the chips

I asked myself this question when I picked it up. I thought it’s some parts of the egg that has gone bad. Actually, it’s fresh curry leaves for additional flavour.

604 Food Critic Assessment

A bag of Stip’s chips salted egg potato chips weighing 200g cost $11. This is a lot of money to be spending on a bag of chips. Regardless of what I think, people are still buying these chips because it provides such a unique flavour. It feels like a lot more work has been put into making these chips compared to regular chips, so I can somewhat justify the price. I enjoyed the bag I purchased, and I think the flavour is very addicting.
