Ramen Gaoh in North Burnaby

We heard of Ramen Gaoh’s scorpion ramen online and thought to challenge ourselves to this famous spicy ramen. When we arrived on Saturday around 12pm, there was already a line up outside. I circled the block around 3 times to finally find a spot at the side street. Ramen Gaoh is located on Hastings Street near Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby

Strength: Soup has arich

Weakness: Long line up and difficult to find parking

Decorations

Ramen Gaoh at Burnaby Menu

Ramen Gaoh has a white signage background with black writing of their store name and logo. The exterior are made of vertical black slats. There is a foyer where most of the people waited. Looking from the front, it seems like there is a interior space and a semi-outdoor area near the front. The interior use a lot of wood like most Japanese ramen places.

Scorpion Ramen

Ramen Gaoh at Burnaby Scorpion Ramen $12.25

The scorpion ramen is Ramen Gaoh’s signature ramen. You can choose from 3 level of spiciness and numbing which kind of remind me of Sichuan cuisine from China. We tried to order the highest level of both but chickened out and ordered level 2 for both when the waitress gave us a shocking look.

When the ramen arrived, we realized that the spicy level was most likely determined by people who are not really exposed to real spicy food. I only felt a little tingle on my tongue. Unfortunately, the broth has simple flavour that relied on the spiciness a little too much. The chashu was a little dry and the noodle were a little overcooked for my liking.

Okonomi Gyoza

Ramen Gaoh at Burnaby Okonomi Gyoza $6.25

We thought to give this Okonomi Gyoza a try because we have not seen them before. All I could say that they are normal gyoza that give you a taste of green onion explosion in your mouth.

Original Chickn Karaage

Ramen Gaoh at Burnaby Original Karaage $6.50

It’s a little hard to imagine a Japanese restaurant screw up a dish that is served in almost everywhere. Ramen Gaoh has done that. These chicken karaage are deep fried for so long that they look darker than the ones I made at home. They are larger pieces but the interior doesn’t have the tenderness that it deserve.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Ramen Gaoh created lots of hype when they first opened. We came to see if we can withstand the spiciest ramen in Vancouver but left with disappointment. The food quality is not bad, but they can be more careful when cooking. I like both the exterior and interior decoration. The dining area has a good atmosphere. Since Ramen Gaoh is opened by the group that opened Ramen Gojiro, Menya Kouji Group, I was expecting a little more for $20 per person.
