Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant

We saw some pictures of the food from Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant on a facebook forum and decided to give it a try. This Korean restaurant has a very unique name with an exclamation mark in it. They feature conventional Korean stir-fry that is re-heated at the table. There are two locations for Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant. We came to the one on Edmonds Street near Kingsway in Burnaby.

Strength: Baby octopus is very tender

Weakness: The neighbourhood doesn’t look too safe

Other Korean Restaurants

Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant front

There are not much parking on Edmonds street so we went around to park on the insufficiently lit side street. They have parking at the rear, but the area looked very shady at night. When I got to the front, the windows look really dark to make me think the store is closed. I soon realize it has a tinted film on the windows.

Graphic of octopus and pork

As we approach the front door, the graphic in the front tells me what this what Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant specializes in.

Inside of the restaurant

We opened the front door and entered. To my surprise, the interior space is very well lit. They use conventional tables and chairs with walls decorated with wood.

Table setup and Utensil

The utensil are made of stainless steel and the graphics on the dishes has a nice touch. We were also given tools like tongs and scissors. At first, we didn’t understand why our stir-fry would require scissors then we saw staff using scissors to cut up the stir-fry in order to make fried rice for customers.

Complimentary side dish

We received 4 simple side dishes. Each of them is tasty and makes me feel this is a home-style Korean Kitchen. It is unfortunate that the staff did not come to offer refill after we finished them.

Spicy Stir-Fried Baby Octopus & Beef $36 (small)

The spicy stir-fried baby octopus & beef seems to be Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant’s signature item. It is placed on a stand with solid gel fuel at the bottom to retain the heat. This dish is topped with bean sprouts on top. We ordered medium spiciness and find this dish with good flavour but not spicy enough. If you have ordered fried rice, leave some of the stir-fry and staff would come to fry it at your table.

Texture of the food

Everything in this dish is coated with Korean sweet and spicy sauce, so it is a little hard to tell what things are. In the beginning, I was complaining about not having enough octopus, but there is actually quite a lot of them in the dish. The baby octopus is the most tender ones I’ve tried in any Korean restaurants. It’s also been processed to have the hard part of the octopus removed. The beef was a little tough and scattered perhaps because they don’t have enough thickness. I also found some rice cake that are cooked perfectly with awesome tender chewiness.

Bean sprout soup that came with stir-fry

Every stir-fried dish comes with complimentary bean sprout soup that is enough for the number of guests to enjoy. The bean sprouts seem to have been lightly fried that they seem to have less water content inside. This gives the soup a wonderful flavour and a rougher texture of the bean sprout. This soup is very simple and delicious.

Steamed Egg $3.00

We also ordered a bowl of steamed egg. I have seen restaurants selling this for $5 to $7, so this $3 bowl of a steamed egg is very reasonably priced. This dish is served with its steamed egg’s top flush with the bowl’s edge. There is not much collapsing going on. The egg has a fluffy texture with lots of finely chopped toppings to provide flavour. This is a very nice dish to order on top of the main dish.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant is a home-style Korean restaurant that focuses on baby octopus stir-fry. One of the special services they provide is to make fried rice at your table using the stir-fry you have ordered. Aside from the shady neighborhood and the tinted windows Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant achieved a very high score to our standard. The small octopus stir-fry cost $36 which drives the overall cost up to $22 per person, but it is reasonable considering we were enjoying fresh seafood. If you enjoy Korean food, we recommend giving Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant a try.
