Mr Japanese Curry

Mr Japanese Curry

Curry was introduced to Japan from Europe in the 1800s. Japanese adopted curry and made it into a sweeter and less spicy paste of their own. Ever since then, curry has become one of the foundations of Japanese cuisine. Japanese curry are often served with deep fried meat or seafood over rice. Due to its simplicity, the quality of each ingredients becomes crucial of a good plate of curry. Mr. Japanese Curry uses high quality Koshihikari short grain rice which we have covered in our Tamaki Gold California Koshihikari Short Grain Rice article. Mr. Japanese Curry can be found on West 8th Avenue near Cambie Street in Vancouver.

Highly Customizable curry

Mr. Japanese Curry has 3 types of curry base; beef, chicken, and vegan.

Mr. Japanese curry has made their curry highly customizable. You can add as much sides as possible, and to make each of your visit a different experience. The cheapest item Mr. Japanese Curry offer with only rice and curry sauce only cost $8, so it can be really affordable.

Mr Curry $15.99

Mr Curry is the most un-customized item on Mr. Japanese Curry’s menu. It has a little bit of everything covered with beef curry base and melted cheese. The prawn tempura is crispy shell and soft on the inside with the batter giving a bit of sweetness. The pork slices soaks up the curry sauce nicely. I enjoyed the intense flaovur of this beef curry.

Chicken Katsu Curry $12.99

The Chicken Katsu curry has a large piece of chicken steak on top of the rice. It has a very generous thickness, and without surprise, the crust is very crispy. The chick curry base is not as thick as the beef one and it goes very well with the chicken. I ate the chicken separately without mixing it with the curry to preserve the texture.

Customizable Spicy level 1 to 4

Mr. Japanese Curry offers spicy level from 1 to 4 on top of their mild flavour. Each additional spiciness level adds $0.10 to the order. I asked for spicy level of 4 for my beef curry, and it was quite spicy. To my surprise, I found a lot of un-mixed spicy paste at the corner of my plate. Spicy level 4 is simply too much for me.

I ordered spiciness level of 2 on my Chicken Katsu Curry, and mixed them well before trying. You can see red spicy paste mixed into the chicken curry. This is a much more tolerable spiciness level even though I was sweaty after eating them.
