Meat & Bread Artisanal Sandwich Shop in Vancouver

Back in 2010, the first Meat & Bread location opened in Gastown right next to Purebread. They make sandwiches with high-quality ingredients and strong cooking skills. With their fast sandwich prep time, they quickly gained traction in the foodie world and gained popularity. Meat & Bread has opened its 4th location in Vancouver. This time, it’s outside the downtown core so the rest of us can enjoy it without crossing the bridge. It is located on West Broadway and Willow Street in Vancouver.

Strength: Sandwich is ready right after you pay. Simple price system.

Weakness: Sandwich drips everywhere that is messy to eat.

Right on West Broadway

Meat and Bread Front

The new Meat & Bread is conveniently located on Broadway. There is a very wide sidewalk with lots of foot traffic. Even though it’s a little far from both major arterial like Cambie and Oak, customer who know about Meat & Bread don’t mind walking a few blocks to buy their sandwich.

Simple interior space

Meat and Bread Interior

The interior space of Meat & Bread are clearly laid out. They have seating to the left, and food prep on the right. As soon as I entered I was naturally guided toward the ordering counter. When I turned right and look up, the menu is right in front of me.

Sandwich-making on display

Meat and Bread Ordering

I like how simple they have made the operation to be. A staff is making near the entrance. He takes the order and make the sandwich right away. The order doesn’t change hands, so there’s less room for mistake. After ordering, I move to the back of the store to pay, and and my sandwich and soup was ready right after. This is very efficient.

Meat & Bread Signature Sandwich

Meat and Bread Fresh Bread

Meat & Bread’s signature is their porchetta sandwich. The porchetta is an Italian-style roasted boned suckling pig seasoned with garlic and herbs then sliced to be served as a filling in sandwiches. You can see what porchetta looks like on the left side of the picture. The bread on the right are freshly baked in-house.

Simple and beautiful display

Meat and Bread Presentation Sandwich and Soup $4.50

Every order is served with a wood plank. The sandwich always comes with a dab of sauce on the side. I’ve ordered the carrot and ginger soup to pair with my sandwich and they added a complementary color to my plate. The soup was hearty and stayed warm throughout my stay. I can taste a little bit of carrot, but not much ginger. It has a consistent liquid-paste texture with a sweet note.

A Proper Sandwich

Meat and Bread Piri Piri Chicken Sandwich $10

Meat & Bread is serious about sandwichs and they are proud of what they do. They sell sandwiches and try to do it very well. It’s got all the essential components down. Everything has a proper proportion. The bread served the base of a sandwich, so they bake them in-house. It has a tough texture to make them feel weighty. My jaws get tired from biting towards the end of my sandwich, but it is still acceptable.

Inside of Piri Piri Sandwich

Meat and Bread Piri Piri Chicken Sandwich Inside

On the inside, the sandwich is filled with shaved cabbage coleslaw, chili aioli, spicy sauce, and pickled red onion. It is a very wet sandwich. The bread already soaked up the majority of the sauce, but the sandwich still dripped everywhere. I like how this sandwich is moist and easy to swallow, but it’s a bit messy to eat.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Meat & Bread serve very well crafted sandwiches. They are focused on sandwiches and do this niche very well. This place is perfect to grab a high quality quick bite. The credit card machine defaults to a 15% tips and I think it’s worth it because they have a staff going around collecting the plates. I like the simple whole-number price tag. Everything in this store spells out simplicity for me. I enjoy the no-fuss environment.
