Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba, Not your average noodle place.

Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba is the new Japanese noodle bar in Downtown Vancouver. They serve thick soba in the dense sauce. After you’re done with the soba, you can get a scoop of rice to mix with remaining sauce. These grease soaked carbs are my newest guilty pleasure.

Kokoro Mazesoba is Vancovuer’s first mazesoba-focused restaurant. I heard of their arrival couple of months ago, and have been waiting patiently for their grand opening.

Welcoming Space with Japanese enthusiasm

The decor in Kokoro Toyko Mazesoba is very modern and bright. Its simplicity interior design with the welcoming staff gives the warm feeling of hospitality. Staff would attend to your needs in a timely manner with enthusiasm. This is a restaurant that carries a piece of Japan with them.

The Mazesob Experience

Mazesoba is Japanese soba mixed in 9 different ingredients. Unlike Japanese Ramen, Soba are thicker, and chewier. Most importantly, it soaks up more sauce for that rich and flavorful taste. My bowl of mazesoba has toppings that perfectly complement each other. However, the greasy sauce is quite thick that made me feel like I just swallowed a tube of glue. The waiter suggested adding vinegar to cut through the grease and it does help.

After finishing the noodle, they offer a scoop of rice to help you finish the rest of your toppings (now has become the sauce), which I like better. The rice soaked up all the grease so it gives the rice a cleaner texture. Whatever happens to my blood vessel later on is a discussion for another day.

Worth Mentions

I’ve noticed there are also Ramen on the menu, for those who like to go to Mazesoba place for Ramen. The Chicken karaage we ordered was quite hard to chew. It is perhaps fried a few minutes too long.

It is interesting to see the drinks served in plastic bags. It makes the space feel less formal, and kind of become a signature for Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba.

Conclusion

The entire mazesoba experience is slightly on the oily side for me. I would recommend it for foodies who loves rich-tasting carbohydrate. They do a good job combining different ingredients to complement each other. Ultimately, you’re looking at a $15 bowl of noodle/rice that will surely fill you up.
