Ham & Eggman’s New Brunch place in Vancouver

Ham & Eggman’s is a new brunch place that opened in March of 2019. We arrived at 9:45 when the restaurant was only half full. By the time I leave at 10:15 it’s almost full. The biggest difference between Ham & Eggman’s with other brunch places are their customization options for protein. There are lots of natural materials in the decor, and the food here can be vegetarian friendly. Ham & Eggman’s is located on Rupert Street near 22nd Avenue, Vancouver.

Strength: Cheap, large portioned brunch that tastes good

Storefront with Christmas light

Ham & Eggman’s Front

The awning signage is simply black and white with a little red accent. There are Christmas lights surround the storefront window frame. From this angle, you can see some natural stones inside the store.

Coffee To Go

They made an effort to tell potential customers they offer coffee to go. Ham and Eggman’s is not just a brunch place, but also a coffee shop. Of course, your to go coffee won’t get the benefit of the refills if you have it in the store.

Daily Special

The sandwich board sign outside also tells us the daily special with their price. The waitress would repeat this again before you order.

Dark themed space with bright yellow back corridor

Ham & Eggman’s Kitchen

Ham and Eggman’s is a medium-sized operation. There are 32 seats including the 4 bar seat. You can see the two chefs through the open kitchen cooking with precision and grace.

Raw material bench with contemporary furniture

Ham & Eggman’s Furniture

Interior space has a lot of natural materials like the wooden bench with natural contour and stone block support. The backing of the bench was painted plywood nailed on the wall at an angle, which is a little rough. There are two large mirrors on one wall. The other side of the wall is a painted cinderblock wall. The table is black and modern. The chair is a little soft.

Greenery on every table

Ham & Eggman’s Greenery on Table

There is small greenery on the table with rock and water inside a larger glass. I know, it does not look very lively. However, is still a good addition to the table.

Good service and refillable coffee

Ham & Eggman’s Coffee $3

My coffee comes with a small container of golden brown sugar, 2% milk and 10% cream. The staff came to refill it when she saw me running low. I didn’t have to ask if it’s refillable or not. Overall, Ham and Eggman’s has very good service. The friendly staff who always come to us with a smile. They would stop by to chat with patrons. However, the food took a bit long to arrive. There were 2 chefs and 3 external staff.

West Coast Benedict $16

Ham & Eggman’s West Coast Benidict $16

The West Coast benedict was benedict with smoked salmon. It comes with 2 benny and a large portion of hash brown. The hash brown has the largest cut I’ve seen. It has very crispy outside with a very starchy interior. The hash browns were well seasoned. I can find some potato skins that peeled off at the bottom of the hash browns. These give a good savory boost.

The Benny

The smoked salmon on the English muffins were a little thin. The eggs were very round and its form. You can see some rosemary bits on top of the Hollandaise sauce.

Medium poached egg

Ham & Eggman’s West Coast Benidict medium poached egg

When ordering the benny, I had a choice for the poached egg yolk being soft, medium, or hard. I ordered the medium softness. It was a little too solid than I am used to, but I think it has the perfect drool for a medium softness yolk. The was no running yolks, no mess.

The English muffin had a tough bottom. It wasn’t easy to cut through. The smokes salmon provided most of the savory taste. The Hollandaise sauce was quite light. I think the egg Benedict had many flavour work in in harmony.

Two Egg Classic $11

Ham & Eggman’s Two Egg Classic $11

The two eggs class is very cheap at $11. It comes with Ham and hash browns with a choice for carbs and proteins. We ordered sourdough bread for the carbs, and ham for the protein. The portion is extremely large for such a cheap dish.

Sourdough bread needs an upgrade

Ham & Eggman’s Two Egg Classic Sourdough Bread

Perhaps I am too picky, but this is not really sourdough bread. The bread does not have enough air pockets, and the texture is a little too tough. The skin also does not have the crunch of a properly made sourdough bread. It also does not have the taste of a sourdough’s natural yeast.

Ham was thick and tender

Ham & Eggman’s Two Egg Classic Ham

Pardon me for the angle of the photo. This is a sectional cut of the ham. As you can see, the ham was quite thick. It is also very tender and juicy. They were easy to cut and bite. On top of that, the portion of these ham were unexpected large. These ham have the perfect saltiness to pair with the carbs. Hands down to the restaurant owner naming themself as Ham and Eggman’s.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Ham and Eggman’s is a very new brunch specialty restaurant that just opened in March 2019. Contrary to other similar cheap restaurants with large portion, the food was very well crafted and have a high quality standard. The $15 per person price point is definitely worth it, even with the 15% min tips preset on the credit card machine.
