Green & Oak Malaysian Restaurant

Green & Oak is a relatively new Malaysian restaurant that has been operating since early 2018. They took over the old Szechuan spicy food restaurant, Mr. Chili and kept majority of the interior decor. Even back when we came to try Mr. Chili, the bright interior and wooden finishes made the space feel clean and warm. This type of interior space definitely is a better fit for this Malaysian restaurant. Green & Oak is located on East Hastings Street near Boundary Road in Burnaby.

Strength: Simple and elegant Malaysian food. Good decoration

Weakness: Beef and pork skewer a bit hard to chew

Subtle green signage

Green & Oak Malaysian Restaurant is located right on East Hastings Street where there are lots of traffic. The modest storefront doesn’t catch a lot of attention but they are one of the better Malaysian cuisine restaurants we have been to.

Lots of wood in the interior

The interior of Green and Oak use a lot of wood for decor and lighting fixtures. This is what remains of the old restaurnat Mr. Chili. The wood decor here does not really fit the old Szechuan cuisine, but fit Malaysian food quite well.

Simple tableware with a twist

We have normal plastic chopsticks and metal forks. The plate also looks quite generic but has an interesting rounded triangular shape.

Hainan Chicken Set $11.50

Our Hainan chicken set has beautiful display. Everything is presented on a wooden tray. It is simply rice, soup, chicken, ahd sauce.

Components in the Hainan Chicken Set

We received chicken breast for the meat and wasn’t sure if this is the case everytime. Even though we prefer to have dark meat when it comes to Hainan chicken, the chicken breast was quite tender and juicy. Kudos to the chef’s cooking skill. The rice looks a bit too yellow, and I suspsect it’s made by mixing powder in rice.

Beef Curry $11.50

Beef curry comes with a plate of white rice. The jasmine white long grain rice are usually not as sticky as the short rice, but these rice seem to be stuck together. I enjoyed the flavour of my curry but the meat is a little tough. In all fairness, my waitress did mention to me that they use beef shank for the beef curry and asked if I am okay with it. I think the beef shank is perfectly cooked because they are quite tender. Unfortunately there are qualities of the poor cut that cannot be overcome by even the best culinary skill.

Mixed Satay $11.70

Mixed Satay $11.70

We have ordered the satay in 3 different types of meat, beef, pork, and chicken. I really enjoyed the peanut sauce on the side. The next time I come to Green & Oak, I would only order chicken satay because both beef and pork satay are a little hard to chew.

Something sweet after the meal

Either mint or caramel candy, a lot of restaurants give out sweets after you get the bill. It was so interesting to see the popping candy next to my bill. It really brings back childhood.

604 Food Critic Assessment

Green & Oak strive to provide good food, and their attention to details can be observed during my time here. There’s no doubt that Green & Oak is such an iconic Malaysian Restaurnat in the greater Vancouver. For $20 per person, we really enjoyed our meal. If you just order a set dish without satay, you can probably lower the cost down to $13, which I believe is quite fair for the food quality.
